rollercoasters on market.

i just saw one of those meter maid interceptors flip itself off one of the muni rails on market and 7th. i think he was trying to speed past a semi truck that was trying to turn right. he got out and seemed ok but sheepish... should be feeling pretty silly.
randomly there was a firetruck off that street so i think it ended up getting resolved pretty quickly.

no wonder those guys are wearing helmets inside those little three wheeled beasts!

Pam Grier as Friday Foster

Last night, I went to the Vortex Room to check out a Pam Grier film that I had never seen. Friday Foster is a blaxploitation film about a mystery of murder and intrigue and a dangerously curious magazine photographer. Typical of Pam Grier films, there was a lot of nudity, fierce female ass-kicking moves and a fresh and funky soundtrack.

Friday Foster Soundtrack:
1. Friday Foster Main Title - Ward L. Chandler
2. Friday/Getting Set
3. The Assassins/The Pidgeon/Hit
4. Mackin/Fancy Pants/Glad Rags
5. Skin City
6. Don't Drop The Soap/Final Solution
7. Hasty Exit/Wheels/Cat & Mouse/Spider & Fly
8. Be Gay
9. Position #69
10. Black Widow
11. Be Shait/Jericho/Super Man
12. WW III
13. Friday (End Titles)

Check out this trailer. Recommended for blaxploitation enthusiasts.

giants vs. padres

tonight i went to my first giants game since moving up here almost two years ago. i've always like the at&t stadium because it feels very open and welcoming inside.
i was lucky enough to get some tickets from adia cause she needed to study. but it was so last minute (like 5 minutes after the game started) that i ended up just going alone. but that was fun because i got to meet all my seat-area mates. it was the giants vs. the padres. i used to be a padres fan when i lived down south but i had to root for the giants this time. they made it easy by hitting a grand slam in the bottom of the 4th inning like ten minutes after i sat down!

i only stayed until the top of the 7th but it was a short fun packed time. and i believe the giants ended up winning the game. yay! before i left, i shot a picture of the bay bridge backdropping the stadium.

lazer sword and super tacos!

This past weekend, I continued my musical exploration by checking out LAZER SWORD who was performing with DNAE Beats and Quitter at the Elbo Room on Friday night. As with Junior Boys, I had not really heard much about Lazer Sword or their music... just that they performed live beats and put on a great show.

When I first entered into the second floor of Elbo room, there was a duo of beat-makers bobbing their heads so hard they could have gotten whiplash. The beats/music they were churning out seems a little all over the place..... and i got the feeling that their large waving head antics might be makin it harder to make music. but who knows. i couldn't figure out if this was Lazer Sword since i had no idea what they looked like. but then the set ended and it was quitter. then Dnae Beats went on and did his own thing. it was pretty fun but not amazing.

Finally, Lazer Sword came on. it was starting to get packed by then and they turmed up the heat! the music was based on some real street, fun, sample-packed hip hop manipulated by the beat machines to be transformed into an electronic, glitch blap, dubsteppy sound. the sound was noticeably cleaner, more purposeful than the previous two performances. the noises/music coming from the two seperate individuals on stage were mashed together to create a grimey mix that worked in a dissonant harmony.

and it was really fun to dance to. i'm starting to explore and learn to gain more of an appreciation for the electronic lean on music and its capabilities to create, stretch and experiment into a whole new level. check out one of their new mixtapes HERE.
all that dancing to my jam got me ravenous. luckily taqueria cancun was just a couple blocks on mission to soothe my super hunger with a super carne asada taco. one of the best tacos in the city to finish a night off right!

across america... with a stop in denver

as i mentioned before, i went to NY a couple weeks ago. on my way there, i ended up having a layover in denver for two hours. the Denver International Airport (DIA) is pretty new and pleasant to be in as far as airports go. i always enjoy the flock of paper airplanes as you ascend from the shuttle train into the baggage claim terminal:
i figured this was an opportunity to see at least one of my friends that reside in denver. so i called up my good friend noah, one of the creative masterminds behind develop clothing, based out of denver. i was stoked that noah was free and nice enough to drive to the airport to hang out with me. we hung out, had some lunch (airport panda express.. yes!) got to spend a minute catching up. now that my friends are flung all across the globe, it really is a treat when our worlds collide... even for just two hours at an airport.

continuing through middle america, i happen to look out the window on two varying landscapes in which the following thoughts crossed my mind.

1st: .... it would be delightful to be able to run through a cloud field just like this:
2nd: wow. i forgot how flat it is in the middle. i'm glad to live in a vibrant, pulsating built environment.

one day, i'd like to do a road trip across america and see it for real... not from thousands to feet above.

Junior Boys at Bimbos 365

last night i had to work the junior boys show. (in case you didn't know, i am currently working part time at bimbo's 365 club as a cocktail waitress to have at least some miniscule amount of cash flow coming in)

to be completely honest, i had never heard of them before or thought that they might be a band that i might even be interested in... but then my faithful twitter told me that my good friend michelle was going to be attending. michelle has a taste in music that has more of an electronic lean that i do but her taste is by no means heinous. after inquiring with some others, i found that in the circle of indie electro pop (as named by me), they are seen as very talented.

the show was an early show... ending at 10:30. probably one of the worse nights as tips go (c'mon electro indie loving hipsters and dotcom'ers... i know you have enough to at least tip me when i bring you a drink to your table) but here's what i thought about the music:
i found their music to be entertaining, fun, easy to dance to and visually appealing. a mixture of electro beats that ranged from heartbreakin to a more relaxed bpm with some soft synth and breathy vocals. they put on a good show. i don't think i would ever pay to go see a show, but i can always appreciate bands that put on a good show filled w/ danceable music.

below is a video for one of their songs which i think is pretty good. if you like the music, check out there new album that just dropped: Begone Dull Care. Even though it might not be my favorite thing, i've even included a link HERE to download it for free.

btw, bimbos is a pretty awesome venue with a great sound system. don't let the name scare you away. look out for a more detailed blog post in the future!

Budos Band at the Independent... and falafels!

last night, i went to check out the Budos Band at the Independent which is on Divisadero and Hayes. it was my first time seeing this 10 piece (apparently 11 but 1 trumpet player was missing) live jam band as well as my first time in the independent. this just added to the excitement of seeing from great funky music.

but first, food was in order. mike and i walked down to ali babas cave on haight and fillmore. this is one of my favorite places to go for falafels in the city. and it may sound silly but one of the main reasons is because they put french fries into the sandwich which makes it a hundred times more tasty! also its really affordable and HUGE at $6. we shared one and some dolmas and then walked over to the independent.
as i mentioned before, this was my first time at the independent. its a pretty cool space. here's a rundown.
things i liked:
* great sound system
* coat check
* seating on the sides and a mezzanine level for more viewing
* good sized stage
things i didn't like:
* crappy lighting/light show during the band performance
* kinda douchy, annoying club manager speech before the performance
* tiny cramped long hallway entrance... why not use the easier direct access door?

now the show. it was an incredibly fun show. there were 10 band members present and it was great to see such a large gathering of passionate music fiends come together to make music. i love watching large live bands.... it makes it feel like a big party. they played a 90 minute set filled with funky, soulful, psychedelic, drum beat music ranging from fast jiving beats to slow outer spacey psych sessions. it was all original music except a unique cover of smokey robinson's my girl. they had a great energy and it translated into the crowd.
i would definitely recommend checking them out and also looking out for their new album that should drop soon.

SAVE THE DATE!

This Round: LA > NYC

I've been absent the last couple weeks as I've been traveling to NYC and LA to check out NYU and UCLA's urban planning programs. I had been accepted to both and really torn on which to attend in the Fall. I love LA but wasn't sure if I was quite ready to move back to the city of opportunity, diversity and sprawl.

I spent most of my days in both cities meeting with professors, sitting in on classes, going to welcome day programming and trying to catch up with friends and family in between.

Geez, NY vs. LA. They both have so many things going on in several arenas that I'm interested in: art, music, urban planning, community development, good people, good food.

After 11 days of hard work, I made my decision and it is....... UCLA and LA.

There are so many things that went into my decision making but here's the short version:

Top 5 for UCLA/LA > NYU/NYC
1) UCLA Program was stronger than the NYU program for what I want to focus on.
2) Connected better with UCLA Professors
3) UCLA costs 28K LESS per year when including cost of living.
4) Planning is very geography specific and I might benefit from learning more California policies.
5) My amazing community of friends and family in LA. (This last one wasn't really a factor into my decision but its a perk)

I'll be continuing to write more about my planned move (which is August/September).
SF friends.... get it while it lasts!
