Soulive and Royal Family Records
Last friday, I went and saw Soulive at the Independent. This band is comprised of 3 members: Eric Krasno, Alan Evans and Neal Evans. They played by themselves and then also with a couple different acts from Royal Family Records, The Shady Horns (bass saxophone and saxophone duo) and Nigel Hall (Soul, R&B). They played for 3 hours straight with incredible soulful and talented solos from all the members. It was a great show full of funk.
I think I really enjoy when record labels travel together and perform various collaborations on stage. It reminded me of when I went to the Stones Throw x Stussy tour this past April where it appears as though Stones Throw is putting together their own "house band" which performed with both James Pants and Mayer Hawthorne.
This year is the Soulive 10 year anniversary which is also marked by their 10th album, Up Here. They announced that the show we attended was being recorded live for their next album and then the crowd got significantly louder, which I thought was funny.
I took a little video of one of the songs where all the members of the various Royal Family Records were on stage. It was with my point and shoot so the sound is pretty awful. If you'd like to hear some legit recordings of the show, check out the crookedgranny.

weary bones and inflatable street art.
today i have weary bones. in light of that, i'll share this weightless video of inflatable street art that is being made in NY by Joshua Allen Harris. enjoy.
found #1
i'm trying out a found series. let's see how it goes! :)
on friday i was in north beach helping mikey check out a new apartment. we got there a little early and wandered around the the neighborhood scoping it out. we saw a little store that said "records" on the front but when we looked inside, it just seemed to be lots of old vinyl/electronic equipment.
after checking out the meager three bins outside, i went inside to check out the shop... and found a secret buried treasure. in the back, there was a staircase down into the basement.... that is CHOCKED full of records.

so many that you couldn't even reach some without moving things around we didn't have enough time to actually dig... but we'll be back!

house of nanking/vesuvio
wednesday was ian's birthday and we went out to celebrate at house of nanking, which is near this famous, beautiful building in north beach.

this is one of the the most well known "americanized chinese" food restaurants in the city. luckily it was a wednesday and in may so there weren't TOO many tourist there. you can order off the menu if you'd like but they prefer that you just let them bring out that day's specialties. that's what we did and we ended up with a delicious array of deep fried shrimp, a fresh soup and dishes such as stuffed mushrooms and sauteed pea sprouts. it was tasty but the price a little steep. i'd say it could be worth it once for the experience but go to the inner richmond for the real stuff.
then we walked over to vesuvio to get a couple beers and relaxed on a nice san francisco night.

there we found a new little friend.

finally the night ended with some delicious birthday cake from sweet things (which also makes some of the best carrot cake in the city) at the moss house. a yummy birthday!
